Monkey Forest

What?

There are several places on Bali where you can see monkeys. The Monkey Forest is the most famous but also the most touristic. For us, it is still a place to see. The real name of Ubud monkey forest is Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana, better known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. You will find long-tailed macaques (about 600) living in clan with hierarchies that you can see especially at meal time. In the forest there is also a sacred temple which is reserved for the priests. It is important to know that at certain times it is allowed to attend ceremonies as long as you respect the dress code. We advise you to be careful with your personal belongings because the monkeys are very thieves. We have seen monkeys putting their hands in tourists’ bags.

Where?

The forest is located in the center of Ubud, about 1 hour from Canggu and Seminyak.

How?

The Monkey Sanctuary is a tourist attraction so it is possible to access by all means. We went there by motorcycle but it is also possible to reach it by car or by bus during a group excursion.

When?

The Monkey Forest attraction is open from 08:30 to 18:00 Bali time. The ticket office closes at 17:30. The best time to visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is 2pm. Most of the monkeys were full, so monkey forest sanctuary staff fed them. Thus, making the monkey’s aggressive nature a bit weaker.
