The Complete Guide to Renting a Motorbike in Bali (2026)
The Complete Guide to Renting a Motorbike in Bali
No fluff — what's legal, what things actually cost, what to ride, and what to expect on the road. Written by the team behind a 4.9★ / 742-review rental shop, not a listicle site.
Bali motorbike rental starts at IDR 100k/day. You need a home licence + International Driving Permit with the motorcycle endorsement. Insurance is optional but strongly recommended.
The Short Version
- You legally need your home country licence plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle endorsement (Category A). A car-only IDP won't cover you.
- Rentals start at IDR 100,000/day for a 110cc scooter and drop to roughly IDR 32,000/day equivalent on a yearly contract.
- Insurance is optional but strongly recommended — from IDR 30,000/day on a scooter.
- Free delivery across South Bali including Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS). Deposit is refundable and no operator should hold your passport.
- The bike you actually need depends on your trip — see the fleet-picking guide.
Why Almost Everyone in Bali Rides
Bali has more than four million registered motorbikes — roughly three per car. That's not a tourist statistic; it's how the island moves. Delivery drivers, teachers, tour guides, warung owners, and expats all commute on two wheels because Bali's road network was built for narrow lanes and rice-field shortcuts, not four-wheeled SUVs.
For a visitor, this has practical consequences. A car ride from Canggu to Uluwatu that Google Maps promises in 45 minutes typically takes 90–120 minutes in traffic. The same trip on a scooter takes 50 minutes because two wheels can lane-filter through everything. Renting a bike isn't a lifestyle choice in Bali — it's the way the island is designed to be used.
Which Bike Should You Actually Rent?
Our fleet is grouped into six tiers. Each tier maps to a trip type rather than a horsepower bracket. Here's the practical version:

Our bike-picking guide maps each tier to specific Bali trip types, from a 3-day Uluwatu weekend to a 6-month Canggu stay.
Licence, IDP & Traffic Fines
Indonesian law requires one of the following to ride legally:
- An Indonesian licence with motorcycle endorsement (SIM C), or
- Your home country's motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with Category A (motorcycle) endorsement
The most common mistake tourists make: bringing an IDP issued from a car-only licence. It won't cover motorcycles. If stopped at a checkpoint without the motorcycle endorsement on your IDP, the fine is treated the same as riding with no licence at all.
Get an IDP before you fly. Standard fee in most countries is USD 20–50 and takes 5–10 working days. How to get an IDP for Bali.
- No IDP or licence: IDR 250,000 – 1,000,000
- No helmet: IDR 250,000
- Missing motorcycle registration (STNK): IDR 500,000
- Riding without headlights during the day (yes, daytime headlights are required): IDR 100,000

Insurance — Optional but Strongly Recommended
Insurance in Bali is not automatically included in the rental price. Ours works as an add-on and covers both damage to the bike and theft, with a defined excess. Here's the current pricing:
| Bike Category | Daily | Monthly | Yearly | Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matic up to 160cc Beat, Gear, Fazzio, Fillano, Vario, NMax, ADV | IDR 30,000 | IDR 600,000 | IDR 1,800,000 | IDR 1,000,000 |
| Matic 161–250cc Vespa, XMax | IDR 40,000 | IDR 750,000 | IDR 2,700,000 | IDR 2,000,000 |
| Honda CBX150 | IDR 40,000 | IDR 750,000 | IDR 2,700,000 | — |
| Manual bikes CRF, KLX, Versys, custom | IDR 100,000 | IDR 1,800,000 | IDR 3,600,000 | IDR 3,000,000 |
Without insurance, damage or theft is your responsibility up to the bike's replacement value. Most short-trip visitors take the daily rate on cheap gear; long-stay riders find the monthly rate saves significantly. More context: do you need a scooter insurance in Bali?

Bali Motorbike Rental vs. Grab, Private Drivers & Taxis
The financial case for a scooter rental becomes obvious once you compare against Bali's transport alternatives.
On average, a monthly scooter rental pays for itself in under three days of active exploring versus Grab or taxis — and gives you unlimited mobility for the remaining 27.
| Option | Approximate cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grab / Gojek car Canggu → Uluwatu, one way | IDR 120,000 – 180,000 | Subject to surge; some areas restricted |
| Private driver (full day) | IDR 600,000 – 700,000 | Popular but limits spontaneity |
| Taxi (Blue Bird meter) | IDR 250,000+ per trip | Reliable but expensive |
| Bronze scooter — full day rental | IDR 100,000 | Includes unlimited trips + free delivery |
| Monthly Bronze scooter | IDR 1,500,000 (~50k/day) | Less than one Grab ride per day |
Fuel is separate but negligible. Pertamina 92-octane runs about IDR 10,000/litre. A full tank on a Yamaha Gear lasts two days of moderate riding.
Where We Deliver in Bali
Free delivery and collection across all major South Bali areas, plus Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS).
Delivery outside these areas or to remote villas (Jatiluwih, Amed, Pemuteran) can be arranged for a small fee. For one-way rides ending outside Bali, see our one-way rental service.
Seasonal Considerations
Dry Season
The easier riding season. Cooler mornings, minimal rain, drier roads. Traffic peaks in July–August with school holidays inbound.
Wet Season
Brings afternoon storms lasting 30–90 minutes. Roads become slippery, especially painted lane markings and manhole covers. Best practice: ride early, park by 2 PM, resume after the storm passes. Nyepi (Balinese New Year, around March) closes the entire island for 24 hours — no riding permitted, not even at the airport.

Police Checkpoints — What Actually Happens
- The Canggu-Seminyak corridor (Jl. Sunset Road, Jl. Petitenget)
- Roads into Ubud (Jl. Raya Andong, Jl. Hanoman)
- Kuta's beach roads
Checkpoints are legitimate and standard — not scams. Officers check for IDP, licence, STNK (vehicle registration), helmet, and headlights. If your paperwork is in order, the stop takes 60 seconds. If it's not, expect a fine and possible bike impounding. Never offer or accept a bribe: formal fines are cheaper than the alternative.

Taking the Bike Off-Island — Nusa Penida, Lombok, Java
Cross-island rentals require additional paperwork. We handle this because most operators don't.
Nusa Penida & Nusa Lembongan
Fast boats accept motorbikes with proof of ownership (STNK). We provide the original STNK and a signed authorization letter.
Lombok & Gili Islands
Public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar accepts bikes. Same paperwork rules apply.
Java
One-way rentals are available for the epic cross-island ride. Bike returned to our partner in the destination city — see our one-way rentals.
Common Scenarios — What Actually Happens
Flat tire or breakdown
WhatsApp our 24/7 line. Our team arrives at your location within 60–90 minutes in most South Bali areas.
Accident, no injury
Take photos of both vehicles, exchange contact details, notify us immediately. If you have insurance, damages are covered up to the excess. Without insurance, you're liable for the actual repair or replacement cost.
Accident with injury
Prioritise the injured party. Bali hospitals worth knowing: Siloam Hospitals Denpasar, BIMC (Kuta and Nusa Dua). Notify us and your travel insurance provider.
Lost key
IDR 200,000–500,000 replacement fee depending on model. Some newer bikes require a dealer call.
Bike stolen
File a police report at the nearest station within 24 hours. With insurance, replacement is covered. Without, you're liable for the market value.
Three Real Renter Profiles
Books a Silver Yamaha Filano for 10 days. Total: IDR 1.33M (weekly + 3 daily days) or IDR 1.6M for a full month with extending. Adds surf rack, opts for daily insurance (IDR 300k/day). Total spend: about IDR 1.75M for the whole trip — roughly the cost of eight Grab rides.
Starts on a monthly Silver at IDR 2M, upgrades to Platinum NMax after month two for weekend trips to Uluwatu and Amed. Adds yearly-equivalent insurance encumbrance. Total: about IDR 15M for six months of unlimited two-wheel freedom, plus the option to swap bikes as travel plans change.
Three days on a Bronze Honda Beat picked up at Ngurah Rai Airport on arrival, dropped at the same location on departure. IDR 300,000 total plus IDR 90,000 insurance. Zero passport deposit. Zero paperwork on collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need an IDP if I already have a licence from home?
Yes. Indonesian law requires an IDP with the motorcycle endorsement (Category A). Your home licence alone won't cover you at a checkpoint or in an insurance claim. IDPs cost USD 20–50 in most countries and take 5–10 working days to issue — get one before you fly.
Can you deliver a bike to me at the airport at 2 AM?
Yes. Ngurah Rai (DPS) delivery runs 24/7 with prior arrangement. Message us with your flight number and we'll be at the pickup zone when you land.
Do you take a passport as deposit?
No — and no reputable operator should. We take a small refundable cash or card deposit, never the passport. If a rental shop asks for it, walk away.
What if I've never ridden a scooter before?
We'll match you with an automatic Bronze bike (Honda Beat or Yamaha Gear) — no gears, twist-and-go — and give you a 15-minute walkthrough on delivery. If you're nervous about traffic, start with rides in Sanur or Nusa Dua before tackling Canggu or Kuta.
Can I pay in USD or crypto?
Yes. We accept IDR cash, card, bank transfer, Wise, Revolut, and crypto (USDT, BTC, ETH). Full currency and payment flexibility.
Can I swap bikes during a monthly or longer rental?
Yes — unlimited swaps are included on monthly and longer contracts. Test a Vespa for a week, switch to an NMax for the airport run, downgrade to a Beat for the beach. No extra fee.
What happens if I break down 100km from my hotel?
Call our 24/7 WhatsApp line. We dispatch a replacement bike and recover the broken one. On the standard rental you pay only for fuel; nothing else.
Can I ride to Java or Lombok on a Bali rental?
Yes — with prior arrangement. We provide the original STNK and a signed authorization letter needed for the ferry. Cross-island rentals carry a small paperwork fee. See our one-way service for drop-offs in Java.
