Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is rapidly enhancing its global reach, positioning itself not only as a magnet for tourists but also as a pivotal gateway for travel throughout Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region. Recent developments have significantly boosted the airport’s connectivity, making it more accessible to international travelers than ever before.
Expanding Horizons: New Routes Take Flight
In a bid to broaden its international network, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has proudly announced the introduction of two significant new flight services within the past month. One of these exciting additions is a daily direct flight connecting Mumbai, India, with Denpasar, Bali. The second is a brand-new low-cost service that links Newcastle, Australia, directly to Denpasar. These new routes mark a crucial step in Bali’s strategy to welcome more visitors and strengthen its ties with key international markets.
Unprecedented Connectivity: Newcastle to Denpasar Direct
The inauguration of the Newcastle to Denpasar route is particularly groundbreaking. This new service represents the first direct flight of its kind, unlocking a wealth of travel options for Australian holidaymakers, Indonesian residents, and global explorers alike.
Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, the dedicated General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, conveyed his excitement to the press, stating, “For the very first time, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport now offers a direct connection to Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. This development significantly expands the ease with which Australian tourists can directly experience Bali’s exquisite natural beauty, bypassing the need for connecting flights through other cities.”
This new flight path, operated by Jetstar under flight code JQ 89, runs three times a week. Flights departing from Newcastle for Bali are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, taking off at 9:30 AM and touching down in Denpasar at 1:05 PM. For the return journey, flights depart from Denpasar on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:20 PM, arriving in Newcastle at 7:15 AM the following morning.
The introduction of Jetstar’s Newcastle-Bali service further solidifies Australia’s already strong connection to the Island of the Gods. Travelers can now enjoy direct flights from an impressive list of Australian cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Cairns, Darwin, Perth, the Gold Coast, and now Newcastle. This extensive network makes Australia the most comprehensively connected nation to Ngurah Rai International Airport.
Strengthening Ties: Mumbai to Denpasar Daily Service
Concurrently, the new daily direct service linking Mumbai and Denpasar is quickly gaining popularity among both leisure travelers and business professionals. Just a mere three weeks after its launch, passengers are already praising the enhanced accessibility between these two predominantly Hindu regions.
Addressing reporters, Mr. Shahab elaborated, “We are delighted to welcome IndiGo Airlines, which now provides direct access from Mumbai to Bali. This route not only enriches Ngurah Rai Airport’s international flight offerings but also plays a vital role in reinforcing the tourism and economic relationship between India and Indonesia.”
Operated by IndiGo Airlines, this daily service marks the third route the airline has established to Bali. Traveling between Bali and India has become more straightforward and convenient than ever, with direct flights now available to Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru, all serviced by IndiGo Airlines and Air India.
India’s Growing Fascination with Bali
Over the past half-decade, Bali has witnessed a remarkable surge in interest from Indian tourists. This growing enthusiasm highlights the island’s appeal as a premier travel destination for visitors from India.
Indonesia has actively pursued initiatives to bolster connectivity between the two nations. The immediate launch of this latest flight service as a daily route underscores the sustained and increasing demand for travel to Bali, signaling that this trend is unlikely to abate soon.
Indeed, statistics from the first nine months of 2025 reveal a significant increase in Indian visitors. A total of 438,646 tourists from India were recorded entering through Ngurah Rai Airport, representing an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This places Indian nationals as the third most frequent arrivals to Bali, closely following Australian and Chinese tourists.
This new Mumbai-Denpasar route also presents excellent opportunities for travelers embarking on multi-stop journeys across Asia. Not only does it provide direct access to the captivating “Island of the Gods,” but it also serves to significantly reduce both travel times and ticket expenses, making regional exploration more efficient and cost-effective.
A Thriving Hub: Ngurah Rai International Airport Statistics
Mr. Shahab confirmed that Ngurah Rai Airport currently manages a robust network of 58 flight routes. Of these, 37 are international destinations, and 21 cater to domestic travel within Indonesia. He concluded by reiterating the airport’s commitment: “As Ngurah Rai Airport continues its expansion, we remain dedicated to delivering exceptional service to all airport users and fully endorsing the flourishing growth of Bali’s tourism sector.”
